Letter To Nursing Students

A Letter To Future Nursing Students:
So you got the letter that says you got accepted into the nursing program! All the hard work has paid off and you are on your way to becoming an official RN. This is definitely a huge accomplishment that should be celebrated! Take some time to soak it in, post it on social media, and call up the family to tell the exciting news. A few months pass and it's already time to prepare for the start of this exciting journey! You'll be hard at work ordering all the books, finding scrubs that (hopefully) fit you, and your very first stethoscope! It's the first day of orientation and you're probably feeling nervous and not knowing what to expect. This is completely normal, and don't worry, everyone else is probably in the same shoes! This is a great time to meet your future professors and fellow classmates. Some of these people will become your rock throughout the program, so be sure to make these connections early! As you progress through the program you may find yourself second-guessing your major. "Did I make the right choice?" or "What if I made a mistake?" may be some thoughts crossing your mind. It's perfectly normal to feel this way. Nursing school is hard and will require determination and perseverance to get through to the other side. One word to perfectly sum up nursing school... OVERWHELMING! There are readings, clinicals, simulations, exams, and dreaded concept maps. Learning to manage your time and study plenty will be key factors to performing well each semester. It's not just the studious portion of nursing school that may seem stressful either. Checking off on skills or performing skills in a facility may be difficult to learn. You may be someone who struggles with inserting IVs or performing accurate assessments. Just like everything else this takes practice... lots of it! In time you will find you become a rockstar at these tasks and will thank yourself for not giving up when the going got tough! Don't get me wrong, there will be days when you won't see the light at the end of the tunnel and feel like there's no relief from the stressors of this grueling degree. Many tears will be shed, breakdowns will occur, and you will become mentally drained. Remember those rocks you have in your life, they will be important during these times of doubt. Carry each other through these tough times and you will come out a stronger person and with a stronger bond! So my future nursing students... please don't lose hope! This degree may be tough but YOU ARE TOUGHER! Before you know it, those 2 1/2 years will be done and you'll be walking across the stage to receive your degree! So make plenty of memories, relish the good times, and laugh your a** off. Nursing school may be crazy and get difficult at times but it's all worth it in the end. Keep your heads held high and continue to walk through hell with a smile! This experience will shape you into a brilliant and dedicated nurse ready to take on the world and all of its challenges! Good luck future nurses I believe in you all!!!

  1. Love this! One of the most challenging degrees you can obtain. After 20 years, I am still learning and at times wonder what did I just get myself into! Lean on your co-workers, classmates, instructors. They’ve been through it also. Keep your eye on the prize of this work you’ll be working towards. We’ll be welcoming you to the club before you know it!

  2. Omg!!! This is so great, it allows yourself and others to know they are not in it alone! And that the thoughts and feelings you have are normal, and you are not the only one feeling that way!
